Sacred Smoke Perfume
Palo Santo at it's earliest uses predating Inca history.
The Quechua and Kichwa peoples incorporated Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) into their spiritual and medicinal practices as a sacred element with profound significance. These indigenous communities primarily used this aromatic wood for purification rituals, viewing it as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms.
In traditional ceremonies, shamans and healers would burn pieces of Palo Santo to create a cleansing smoke that was believed to clear negative energies and malevolent spirits from both people and spaces. Unlike the aggressive burning of many ritual plants, Palo Santo was typically lit briefly and then allowed to smolder slowly, releasing its distinctive sweet, citrusy fragrance.
Beyond spiritual cleansing, these communities used Palo Santo medicinally. The smoke was considered therapeutic for respiratory ailments, while tea made from the wood helped treat digestive issues, inflammation, and pain. Oil extracted from the wood was applied topically for skin conditions and muscle aches.
The Quechua and Kichwa honored the Palo Santo tree through sustainable harvesting practices. They only collected wood from trees that had died naturally and remained on the forest floor for at least 4-10 years, a practice they believed allowed the wood to concentrate its healing properties and sacred energy. This approach reflected their deep respect for the natural world and belief that the tree's spirit continued to exist after its physical death.
Ceremonial use typically involved expressions of gratitude to the tree's spirit and to Pachamama before collection or use, acknowledging the reciprocal relationship between humans and nature central to Andean cosmology.
