(The Guardian of the Land)
During my childhood school vacations, my parents would often take us to Mexico to visit my grandparents. While many memories fill those visits, the ones that shine brightest are of late nights spent racing with my cousins along dusty dirt roads, mustering up courage for nervous trips to the dark outhouse, and listening to my grandfather's spine-tingling stories. This, was one of those stories as now told by me, his granddaughter.
In the highs and lows of the Mexican seasons stands a mango tree on my grandparents' land. Beneath it sleeps an Indigenous man. When my grandparents began building on their property, they uncovered a skeleton. This ancestor visited my grandfather in a dream. He was Indigenous to the land. He spoke no words, showed neither anger nor fear. He simply wanted my grandfather to know he was there and wished to rest undisturbed. The next day, my grandfather reburied the bones and planted a mango tree where his hammock would hang strong creating a quiet place where he could rest alongside the Indigenous man beneath the mango's shade. To this day, the tree and the Guardián de la Tierra still watch, still rest.
